On a production area of 3,800 m2 GOEBEL will produce 20.8 million blind rivets per month in Erkrath with +70 specialized production machines.

With a planned start date at the beginning of the 3rd quarter of 2023, Goebel GmbH will successfully relocate production to Germany and produce a variety of different blind rivets and toggle fasteners that proudly carry the "Made in Germany" label. The continuous efforts, investments and passion of the management team have made the Goebel Group one of the market leaders in the fastener industry.

The production facilities will be equipped with environmentally and energy friendly features, utilizing the latest solar energy technology to reduce CO2 emissions. Production will run in two shifts, five days a week, and have a capacity of 250 million pieces per year.

Coupled with a dedicated QC management system in accordance with ISO 9001:2015, which includes full documentation control of all stages of production, starting from the raw material wire to the final inspection of the finished product using the latest optical sorting equipment.

All packaging proudly bears the "Made in Germany" label along with a QR code that allows customers to download the complete certification package for the selected batch to their smart device.

Marcel Goebel, CEO of GOEBEL Group and Elias Goebel CTO of GOEBEL Group, have decided for themselves to take this step and are also leading the implementation.

Major customers from the industry have encouraged GOEBEL to make this investment. Some of them already have fixed supply agreements, which will lead to a direct good utilization of the machines.

The difficulties in the supply chains of the last years, the coming into force of the Supply Chain Act or the so-called Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) - in German about border adjustment mechanism for carbon dioxide (CO2) - should pay manufacturers outside the EU if they want to sell goods in the Union, where CO2 was emitted in production, in addition to the tense global political circumstances left no doubt for the start of this project.

Exactly one year ago in March 2021, the container ship "Ever Given" ran aground. For six days, the 400-meter-long freighter blocked the important waterway between Asia and Europe. Hundreds of ships could not pass, which significantly disrupted global trade. On March 29, the "Ever Given" was uncovered. 

Now the world is faced with a different, but possibly greater in scale challenge than what we saw from the six-day blockade of the Ever Given - The People's Republic of China has been operating a strict zero covid policy since the original breakout in the city of Wuhan. This is implemented with strict quarantine rules, mass testing and harsh lockdowns. The strict zero-covid policy is to be adhered to in order to quickly get the now rampant Omikron wave under control. 

As a result of the strict measures, millions of residential units and production facilities are closed or in lockdown, and ports are only partially loading or shipping goods. 

This is already causing significant disruptions in the supply chain, with supply chains still not functioning as we knew them before the pandemic.

The scale could become far greater than what we have ever seen. 

The cost of container shipping could quickly skyrocket from the current approximate 9,500 Euros for a 20" container for Europe, to over approximate 20,000 Euros for a 20" container, like the current transportation costs for shipments from China to the US. Because of the shortage of containers and shipments from the largest ports in the world (in China), the shipping companies could again feel prompted to increase prices.

How long could this situation last?

It's hard to say, but in the case of Hong Kong, we could see that they are now easing after about 3 months of the omicron wave.

The news and extent of shortages in the commodity chain, as well as renewed supply chain problems, will not show a short-term recovery in terms of prices and availability. 

In view of the increasingly dramatic procurement situation, further significant supply bottlenecks are to be expected in the coming weeks and months, as well as price adjustments. 

The team of Goebel is at your disposal and coordinates with you their needs. We are endeavored, and/or was instructed by the management, that regular customers naturally receive a preferential treatment, we reserve ourselves however due to the critical situation at any time the right to pronounce price adjustments and supply quantity allocations.

We feel it is our duty to inform and sensitize our customers at an early stage, even if the bad news does not seem to be coming to an end.

Our G-GRIP full stainless steel lockbolt system covers an extensive grip range and is suitable for many applications. The G-GRIP lockbolt is available in 4,8mm (3/16”) and 6,4mm (1/4”) diameters. Both the 4.8mm (3/16”) and 6.4mm (1/4”) lockbolt pins are available in 2 lengths each for the following grip ranges.

(4,8 mm & 6,4 mm) G10 grip range: 1.57 - 15.88 mm // .062 - .625 inch

In a time that has been characterized by supply chain difficulties since the pandemic, this decision from Brussels will certainly not help to ease the situation in the supply chains of fasteners. The higher prices will have to be passed on to the customers, who in turn will have to enforce them with their clients. In China, mainly the mass products of steel screws are produced for the world market. The European manufacturers, who have pushed for the introduction of the punitive tariff, mostly produce special screws for the automotive sector and are working at full capacity, with extremely long delivery times at the moment.
 
Some importers have already reacted last week and announced a so-called anti-dumping (punitive duty) surcharge of +41% - 89% with immediate effect to their customers. These figures result from the fact that not all Chinese manufacturers have been classified with +86.5% penalty duty, but the majority of Chinese manufacturers have.
 
In addition, a real sell-out of steel screws is taking place. The industry is still trying to find goods at old conditions. The warehouses are empty and the order books in Europe are full after the production backlog caused by the pandemic. Nowadays, anyone ordering screws in Asia has to reckon with delivery times of up to 240-360 days. The switch to other production countries has also brought their capacities to a limit, with extremely increased prices.
 
The entire European industry will be strongly affected by this, the timing could not have been worse.
 
In addition, it is to be hoped that the Omikron wave, which unfortunately seems to have Hong Kong firmly in its grip, will not spread to China and that the zero-corona tolerance will again lead to lockdowns of production facilities and ports in the coming weeks. 
 
This would put the supply chain problem to the test once again worshipfully. 
 
Europe seems to have the omicron wave behind it, with European countries all pursuing opening strategies that are gradual or immediate with reduced corona requirements. This should continue to spur economic growth, but we see major risks to the above for 2022.

Do you know the story of the Golden Rivet?

Alain Le Roux discovered this story during a hike in Solingen.

The legend about the Golden Rivet of the Müngsten Bridge is probably as old as the Müngsten Bridge itself. 934,456 rivets have been hammered into the bridge to hold the individual steel sections together. And one of them, according to legend, is made of pure gold.

The problem is that the almost one million rivets built into the Müngsten Bridge cannot easily be inspected one by one. And yet there have always been death-defying treasure hunters who have taken on all the dangers in search of the golden rivet. But the most the treasure hunters have found is death.

There is a commemorative plaque, presented by Adolf von Berg in his book "Die Thalbrücke bei Müngsten" (The Thal Bridge at Müngsten), which mentions a bronze rivet with a golden head that is said to have been hammered into the bridge arch on 22 March 1987 on the occasion of the centenary of Emperor Wilhelm I. The bridge is said to have been built with the help of a bronze rivet.

But even the inspectors and restoration teams of the Müngsten Bridge have not yet come across a golden rivet, or the lucky finder keeps quiet about his find. In the meantime, the bridge has been repainted countless times, so it is highly doubtful that the golden rivet would be visible at all.

Then, in August 2011, a delegation of heritage conservationists from Remscheid and Solingen and an employee of the Bergische Entwicklungsagentur hoch³ (Bergisch Development Agency) went to Augsburg to search through MAN's archives there as part of the application for the Müngsten Bridge as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By chance, they found a historical document there on which a handwritten transcript of an interview with a former employee was written. This person, whose name is unknown, claimed to have struck the golden rivet. The interview was conducted by a Mr Petermann. The legend of the Golden Rivet has thus been given a new facet that is difficult to see through.

Thus, the legend of the Golden Rivet remains unsolved to this day.

The high strength blind rivets S-LOCK feature a double mandrel locking system, flush mandrel break, extensive grip range and high connection stability. Even under dynamic pressure, the high strength blind rivets S-LOCK remain tight.  The rivet mandrel always breaks flush to setting head, even with various material thicknesses if these are within the rivet‘s grip range. With a properly prepared pre-drilled hole, these rivets are splash-proof and dust-tight. During the setting process, the distinctive ring is drawn into the rivet body and retained inside. This builds a large closing head that ensures high tensile values. The high strength rivets S-LOCK can be applied e.g. in vehicle manufacturing and car body construction, trailer and tank construction, in bulding industry as well as in automotive industry and general industry.

Sebastian Köhr started as sales representative at Goebel GmbH in October 2010. He is the proof that through great arrangement, commitment and willpower it is possible to make it to the board of directors within only 10 years. From his positions as Assistant to the operative management from 07/2015 to 07/2017 and subsequently COO (Chief Operation Officer) from 07/2017 to 02/2019, up to his current position as CFO (Chief Financial Officer) 02/2019 until today, his career at GOEBEL reads like a steep career ladder. Nowadays Sebastian Köhr is not only responsible for the finances of the entire GOEBEL Group, but with his great expertise as former COO he is always ready to support the GOEBEL Group to make it even better for its customers.

The Beginning / Retrospective
This very day 25 years ago, on the 15.08.1995, Marcel Goebel started his career at the GOEBEL GmbH. In the meantime he became the sole shareholder and CEO of the GOEBEL Group with subsidiaries in the Netherlands, France, Poland and the US. Since 1979, more than 40 years, the GOEBEL GmbH is an established brand on the market. When asked what moves and drives Marcel Goebel the most , he quickly answers with: “The personal will to constantly improve, to develop the  brand with innovative solutions and serve to the customer. This spurs me and my team on, each day.”

It all started 40 years ago - in Unterbach near Düsseldorf. 2011/2012 - moved again - but now only the up the street and moved to the former lighting plant and rebuilt. Spacious office buildings, a training room, meeting rooms, etc. a representative building - which reflects the quality of GOEBEL.

The ISO 9001 is an international standard for quality management systems. As the most popular standard in the ISO 9000 series, the ISO 9001 is used to demonstrate the consistency of quality within a company. This is the quality of both the products and the services of the company.

The ISO 9001 standard can help with organizing processes, it improves the efficiency of your processes and is useful for continues improvements.

Not just the internal processes are improving with ISO 9001, even satisfaction of both customers and employees can increase.

The first edition of the ISO 9001 standard was released in 1987. After that there have been a few revisions. Both in 1994 and 2008 there were minor revisions. In 2000 came the first major revision. The last revision, second major revision, was in 2015.

As a company in the fastening technique, quality is very important to Goebel. Continues improvement and consistent quality is what we aspire and ISO 9001 standard is a big part of that.

We always stay up to date with our ISO 9001 certification. We were already 9001:2015 certified as of 2016. This means that this year we needed to get certified once again.

A Blind rivet is a well-known fastening product in the industry. A blind rivet can be used in many different types of construction, but if you are looking for a special characteristics you might want to look into high strength blind rivets.

What is the difference?

Just like a standard blind rivet, a high strength blind rivet can be used to fasten a blind construction. The high strength rivets come in different forms and shapes, with every type having its own benefits. Unlike a standard blind rivet, these rivets are able to withstand more force and usually have a greater grip range.

Because of the advantage of being able to withstand higher forces and having a greater grip ranger, these rivets can be used in industries such as car manufacturing, trailer construction, container construction and machine frame construction.

Beside the application of these rivets, there is also a difference in the type of tools. These high strength blind rivets do require special nosepieces or special tools to fasten the rivet! If you are not sure what tool to use, you can always contact us for advice.

From GO-BULB to Premium, what are the options

There are many different kinds of high strength blind rivets. Every different type comes with its own characteristics and benefits. The right high strength rivet depends on different aspects and demands.

Most of the high strength rivets start from 4,8 mm in diameter. There is one exception, the GO-BULB/INOX rivets. These are the smallest high strength rivets and are start from a diameter of 3,2 mm up to 6,0 mm. Therefore the GO-BULB and GO-INOX can be used in smaller holes. Unlike the   GO-LOCK, available even with a diameter of 9,8 mm!

The M-LOCK and GO-LOCK both have the special characteristic that they are filling. This characteristic strengthens a construction. For a high strength blind rivet, it is a real benefit! Even though a hole is a little bigger, an M-LOCK or GO-LOCK rivet will fill it completely.

There is also a little difference between the GO-LOCK and M-LOCK.

The GO-LOCK, for example, has a special locking system engineered into the fastener.This locking system creates an internal lock during installation. Therefore this specific type does not require a special nosepiece. Unlike the M-LOCK. Although the GO-LOCK and M-LOCK are much alike, the M-LOCK needs a special nosepiece for proper setting.

Some of the high strength rivets, like the H-LOCK, are designed to withstand a high load/ forces on the construction. Other can be used in thin sheet material, such as the PREMIUM-LOCK.

For almost every construction, there is a high strength blind rivet solution.

ISO 14589

All the Goebel high strength blind rivets are ISO 14589 proofed. There are 5 different tests the rivets have to go through. First the shearing test, the tensile test, mandrel push out test, mandrel breaking test and the mandrel retaining test.

The shearing test and the tensile test are to test the maximum of shear load and tensile load the rivets can endure to failure.

The mandrel push out test, breaking test and retaining test are all focussed on the mandrel of the rivet. In these tests the breaking point, the push out resistance and the retention capability are tested.

It is possible to receive the inspection report for every batch that is delivered.

The GO-300 is a new addition to our battery tool family. It has a working range from M5 to M10 - all materials and M12 - aluminum and steel! The easy to identify colored mandrels allows the user to quickly reach for the correct threaded mandrel needed for the blind rivet nut application. The multifunctional switch panel indicates not only the battery level, but also the gives the user the option to adjust the stroke range of 8 mm. The easy to adjust stroke intervals of 2mm can be set to 8-6-4-2 mm and can be controlled on the touchpad located at the top of the tool. In addition, for detailed adjustments there is a 1 mm step adjustment option. Performance is what we strived to provide with this tool and so we added a pulling force adjustment as well, which the user can set to L = low and H = high. These fine-tuning details make it possible for the operator to control the setting process of various blind rivet nuts and threaded inserts based on material, length and application. The powerful 14.4V / 4.0 Ah battery provides a long service life and is protected in a hard plastic case with all threaded mandrels included as well. The new GO-300 addition to the GOEBEL cordless tool family offers modern features that provide advantageous benefits to the operator in all jobsite applications.

This is a special place for children whose life expectancies are reduced, due to an illness. A Cup blind rivet, or sealed end blind rivet, is a rivet that can be used when a construction has to be airtight and/or watertight. Unlike a regular blind rivet, the rivet body of a cup rivet is closed. Therefore, the mandrel head of the rivet is completely enclosed in the rivets body. This also ensures mandrel retention.

The characteristic of this rivet makes it very suitable for special applications. A few examples are the container construction; shipbuilding; the food industry and the air-conditioning industry. A Cup rivet can be applied to every construction that has to be air or waterproof. 

The qualities of the cup rivets are almost the same as the standard blind rivets. The cup rivets are even available in the SS316/Duplex quality. This quality offers the possibility to use these rivets even in a highly corrosive environment and still keep a construction air and watertight.

The cup rivet seems the perfect solution for most constructions, but it is important to take a few things into consideration.

The drilling hole in the construction plays a big part in the waterproofness of the construction. If the shape or size does not fit the cup rivet perfectly, the construction will not be waterproof anymore, even though a cup rivet is used. It is very important to make sure the drilling hole fits the cup rivet perfectly. A washer can be added to the rivet, to ensure a watertight construction.

Furthermore the grip range is very important to guarantee that the construction is watertight. Every size has its own specific grip range. If the incorrect range is used, the construction might not be waterproof anymore.

Last but not least, the quality of the rivet is important. The required quality of the blind rivet will depend on the quality used in the complete construction itself. However, this is a point of attention for any fastening product.
